That is the most common brief I get from deep-tech website design clients: a robotics, autonomy, simulation or applied-AI startup that has outgrown its launch site and needs a rebuild that finally matches the sophistication of the product. The hard part is not the visuals — it is finding one person who can carry the project from design through code, ship something that a technical audience respects, and then hand your team full ownership of the codebase and every asset instead of locking you into a retainer. That is the exact engagement this post is about, written by the developer who runs it.

Why deep-tech websites are a different problem

A deep-tech site is not a lifestyle-brand site with a different logo. Your visitors are engineers, research leads, robotics and autonomy teams, and the technical partners at the fund that just backed you. They can smell hype in one scroll.   • Show the system, don't just describe it. A simulation platform, a robot fleet, a sensor pipeline — these are inherently visual and spatial. The single highest-leverage thing on the page is usually a real, interactive representation of what the product does, not another stock photo of a server room.
  • Restraint over spectacle. Motion and 3D earn their place by explaining something. A gratuitous particle field reads as marketing filler to this audience; a scroll-driven walkthrough of your pipeline reads as engineering confidence.
  • Performance is a credibility signal. A robotics team that ships real-time systems will judge your site by how it runs. A janky hero animation quietly says "these people can't ship."

The post-funding rebuild trap

The rebuild-after-a-raise moment has a specific failure mode. You suddenly have budget, so you hand the site to a full-service agency. Nine months later you have a beautiful marketing site — and you cannot change a comma without a change order, because the code lives on their infrastructure, the CMS is their proprietary shell, and the design files were never handed over. You raised money to move faster and you bought yourself a dependency.

The alternative most funded founders don't realise is available: engage one senior creative developer who owns both the design craft and the engineering, ships the whole thing, and then hands you the keys. Fewer handoffs, no agency overhead on top of the person actually doing the work, and a codebase your own engineers can read on day one. The reason a single specialist works for a deep-tech rebuild is that design and implementation stop fighting each other. When the person choosing the motion is the same person writing the shader, there is no "the designer promised something the developer can't build" gap — the two are negotiated continuously against what actually performs.

None of this is exotic — it's how a professional engagement should close. The reason to name it up front is that plenty of studios quietly keep one of these rows, and that single row is what turns a one-time project into a permanent retainer. Where WebGL earns its place on a deep-tech site

  • A live product diorama. A React Three Fiber scene showing your robot, environment or sim world that the visitor can orbit or that reacts to scroll — far more convincing than a rendered video, and it loads inline.

  • Scroll-driven pipeline walkthroughs. GSAP-scrubbed sequences that reveal each stage of your simulation or perception pipeline as the visitor scrolls — explanatory, not gratuitous.

The engineering discipline here is that all of it stays inside a performance budget.
